EXCLUSIVE: Harambee Stars players boycott trip to Cape Verde
Harambee Stars players on Monday made good their threat to boycott the trip to Cape Verde for the return leg of the 2018 World Cup qualification match, Nairobi News can exclusively confirm.
This follows a row between the team and Football Kenya Federation over unpaid training allowances amounting to millions of shillings, as well as air ticket refunds stretching back to July.
Harambee Stars, who defeated the Blue Sharks 1-0 on Friday, was slated to depart Wilson Airport at 10 a.m on Monday aboard a chartered flight provided by the Government for Cape Verde’s capital Praia, via Niamey, Niger.
The scheduled departure however aborted after players refused to leave the team’s hostel in Kasarani on Monday morning.
“No more excuses. The only language we will listen to right now is money, not even the President can convince us,” one of the players told Nairobi News.
Kenya risks a huge fine and lengthy ban from World governing body, Fifa, should the team fail to honour the away leg tie set to be played on Tuesday.
