Exclusive: Nameless reflects on lessons after 25 years as musician

Celebrating a quarter-century within the music industry, David Mathenge, popularly known as Nameless, share his enduring journey and upcoming plans in an exclusive interview with Nairobi News.

In honor of this significant milestone, Nameless is currently in the studio working on an album that aims to blend the musical flavors of both younger and older generations.

The first track from this anticipated album is set for release at the end of February.

Looking ahead to 2024, Nameless expresses excitement about the jubilee year, stating:

“It’s been 25 years, and it is a big deal for me. Hoping to release an album that celebrates my musical journey.”

While his collaborative album with his wife, Wahu, was briefly paused after the arrival of their third child, Nameless is revisiting his solo project.

He emphasizes the focus on preserving the essence of the Nameless journey and reconnecting with the audience by recounting his evolution.

“It’s been 25 years and it is a big deal for me. That will be towards the end of the year. Hoping to do an album that is a celebration of my music journey. I will be announcing that later. While my joint album with my wife, Wahu, was shortly paused after the arrival of our third child, I am now revisiting my solo project.”

Navigating the music industry for a quarter-century, Nameless acknowledges the challenges and joys.

He finds himself in a unique position with a fanbase spanning generations, thanks to hits on platforms like TikTok. Striving to bridge generational gaps,

Nameless aims to give his audience a blend of contemporary sounds and nostalgic elements. He plans to release songs monthly or bi-monthly leading up to the full album.

“Though our collaborative album remains on the horizon, my immediate focus is on preserving the essence of the Nameless journey. It will be my album with both new and older generations. I will start releasing at the end of February. The aim is to reconnect with my audience by recounting my evolution to this point,” he said.

Reflecting on the major lessons learned over 25 years, Nameless emphasizes the importance of being open-minded and observant.

He advises against quick judgments, encouraging people to observe and understand before reaching conclusions. This approach applies to various aspects of life, including relationships and careers.

“I have never been a know-it-all despite being in the industry for 25 years. I learn from everyone, regardless of age.”

Valuing relationships and friendships, Nameless emphasizes understanding people’s psychology and managing mental health.

“I also do not make music for myself but for people. Some artists make music for themselves but for me, I design it for people. I adjust and design what I feel people want at that particular time. Every day we have to cope with life but always find a healthy way to cope. Even with my wife, I have to learn how to live with her since I appreciate the big role she plays in my life.”
