Did Raila, Kalonzo ‘lie’ on teachers’ salary M-Pesa drive?

Embarrassing details have emerged on how Cord principals Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka lied to Kenyans in the M-Pesa campaign to raise funds for the striking teachers

During a rally at Uhuru Park on Wednesday, Mr Odinga announced that he and his co-principal Kalonzo Musyoka had each deposited Sh100,000 in the M-Pesa account.

But Safaricom disclosed on Thursday that only Sh129,501 had been collected in the campaign, .

The mobile phone company said the ‘Solidarity Account’ had raised the amount as at 7pm.

It appears Mr Odinga and Mr Musyoka have not kept their word.

The initiative comes after several successful mobile-based fundraising campaigns.

Kenyans in August raised Sh6.1 million through mobile money to help Emmanuel Jadudi undergo a brain tumour surgery in India.

More than Sh664 million was raised in 2011 in a fundraiser dubbed ‘Kenyans for Kenya’ to provide food supplies and long-term solutions to famine that had ravaged the northern Kenya.

The M-Pesa paybill account number 672672 was registered on Wednesday by ODM through its executive director Oduor Ong’wen, records from Safaricom show.
