EXPOSED: Scandal of city teachers leasing staff quarters to tenants

Shocking details have emerged of how teachers in public schools in Nairobi county have been renting out staff quarter houses to non-teaching staff.

Some of the teachers are receiving up to Sh10,000 monthly rent from tenants living in the houses.

The revelations have prompted Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko to order an audit of all occupants of public school houses in order to weed outsiders.

“It has been reported that non-teaching staff and outsiders have occupied the teachers quarters in public schools. I want to direct the Nairobi Compliance and Disaster Department to carry out an audit for these schools,” said Governor Sonko on Thursday.

Mr Sonko directed that the teachers’ quarters be occupied by teachers employed in the respective schools. Non-staff tenants are to be evicted with immediate effect.

CENSUS

Lands and Housing Executive Mr Charles Kerich also ordered for census to ascertain the number of teachers’ quarters unlawfully occupied and their location.

He also urged head teachers to acquire title deeds for the lands where their schools stand.

“It is very important for schools to have the title deeds because it will hinder land grabbers and private developers from occupying their land. Those who do not have the title deeds in their possession should come to my office and acquire one,” said Mr Kerich.

Nairobi Chief Security Officer in charge of Compliance and Disaster Management Mr Tito Kilonzo said his department will make sure that the non-teachers are evicted and action taken against them.

“Once we get to know how many houses have been unlawfully occupied and where they are located,we will bring in enforcement and evict them immediately,” said Mr Kilonzi.
