Eyebrows rise as Raila Odinga’s daughter Winnie misses key meeting with President Ruto

Ms Winnie Odinga, the daughter of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga on Monday, December 5, 2022, missed a meeting between members of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) and President William Ruto.

President Dr Ruto held a meeting with the newly appointed EALA members even as the details of the meeting remain scanty.

In a photo seen by Nairobi News, all the other nine members of EALA were at the meeting but only Ms Odinga was not.

The leaders who attended the meeting with the Head of State before taking photos include those from the Kenya Kwanza coalition led by the Head of State and those from the Azimio la Umoja Coalition led by Mr Odinga.

Those from Kenya Kwanza include; Mr Hassan Omar who contested for the Mombasa Governorship seat on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket but lost to Mr Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir who contested on an ODM ticket.

Ms Zipporah Jesang Kurgat Kering is a former Nandi woman Representative who lost in the General Elections to Ms Cynthia Muge of UDA.

The two had ironed themselves out during the UDA party nominations but Ms Muge who was a Member of the County Assembly (MCA) went ahead and won the contest.

Mr David Sankok who is also a former nominated Member of Parliament and who had announced his break from active politics was also part of the meeting. He is a member of Kenya Kwanza.

Mr Godfrey Mwangi Maina, who was a staunch supporter of President Dr Ruto in the last elections and at age 28, is the youngest amongst them all.

Ms Falhada Iman Dekow was nominated as a Senator in 2017 by the Jubilee Party and was lucky to be given a slot into EALA as well. She managed to make it to the list when gender was considered.

Those from Azimio who were part of the meeting include; the son of Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka Mr Kennedy.

Mr Kennedy is serving his second term in EALA as he was first nominated to the position in 2017 through the Wiper Party.

Mr Kanini Kega was nominated through the Jubilee Party after he lost his bid to retain his seat as the Kieni Constituency Member of Parliament. He lost to Mr Njoroge Wainaina of UDA party.

Mr Suleiman Shahbal of ODM was also part of the meeting. Ahead of the 2022 General elections, Mr Shahbal who was eyeing the Mombasa County Governorship seat was edged out by the party which went ahead and awarded the ticket to his rival Mr Nassir.
