Mysterious eyewitness to serve one and half years in jail

The man who captured public attention after he claimed to have witnessed two high profile accidents last year has been sentenced to one-and-a-half years in jail.

Mr Dennis Muigai Ngengi was facing charges of impersonating a public officer by claiming to be a Captain in the Kenya Defence Forces at Ukunda town, Kwale County in 2015 but later jumped bail.

He pleaded guilty to the charge before Kwale Resident Magistrate Mr Patrick Wambugu on Thursday and was convicted without the option of a fine.

IMPERSONATION

The suspect was arrested in Ruiru in Kiambu County last year, three days after he claimed on live TV that he had witnessed the accident in which Nyeri Governor Wahome Gakuru died near Kabati on the Thika-Sagana road.

The accused had been previously charged that on April 12, 2015, at Ukunda Township, with intent to escape arrest after committing a traffic offence, presented himself to police Inspector Loilobon as a Captain based at Moi Airbase, Nairobi.

He was then released on a Sh50, 000 bond and expected to honour court hearings but he absconded.

The bond was cancelled and the accused detained at Kwale GK Prison where he will now serve his jail term.
