Family of socialite Brenda Akinyi to sue activist Mildred Owiso

The family of Brenda Akinyi Ochola, a Kenyan socialite who died in Malaysia, is considering suing activist Mildred Atieno Owiso for defamation.

In a letter written to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) by the family’s lawyer, identified as O Onyango of Shabaan Associates, the family demanded that the Nairobi-based activist be arrested.

“We wish to appeal to your office for immediate action leading to the arrest and prosecution of the said person. Our client has approached us for immediate action from your good office,” the letter reads in part.

According to the lawyer, the family was willing to facilitate logistics and also provide more information to escalate the matter, which was causing them tension.

Ms Brenda’s family allege that a false message was circulated on Ms Owiso’s Facebook page and groups that she died while dealing drugs in the Asian country.

Nairobi News understands that the activist, who is also known for her controversial views, has also received a demand letter.

In an initial statement, the family confirmed that the Instagram socialite fell ill and was admitted to a hospital in Kuala Lumpur on 15 April.

However, despite doctors’ best efforts to save her life, she passed away on 25 April 2023.

“On behalf of the Ochola family, we wish to address the untrue rumours circulating about my sister, Brenda Akinyi Ochola. Brenda fell ill and was admitted to Kuala Lumpur Hospital and passed away on 25 April 2023,” the family said in a statement.

The family also refuted claims that the deceased was in a coma and on life support.

According to the family, Mrs Akinyi suffered from mycoplasma pneumonia septicaemia, leading to hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy and multiple organ failure.

“At this difficult time, we respectfully request privacy as we mourn our loss and ask that you keep our family in your prayers,” the family said in the statement.
