TRM Drive killer demanded Sh500k ransom – family
Dr Lilian Mutea, the spokesperson for the grieving family, shared the heart-wrenching details surrounding the untimely death of their daughter, Rita Waeni Muendo.
“Our beautiful Waeni, a radiant soul in our lives, was tragically taken from us far too soon, at only 20 years of age. She was due to join her fourth and final year of University at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT),” read the statement.
The family disclosed the harrowing sequence of events leading to Rita’s demise. On Saturday, January 13, 2024, Rita left her aunt’s residence in Syokimau to meet with a friend.
Tragedy struck when, on Sunday, January 14, at 5:00 am, her father received a chilling message from Rita’s phone number, demanding a ransom of Sh500,000 within 24 hours for her release. Distraught, the family promptly reported the matter to the police and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), initiating investigations.

Two subsequent messages followed, reiterating the demand for ransom. Regrettably, the family could not gather more details or negotiate, and some demands were made after Rita had already been fatally attacked.
“After a painful and futile search, working with the DCI, we positively identified our child as the girl tragically murdered at the wake of Sunday morning at/or around Thika Road Mall, January 14. We believe she was lured by her killer, who also tried to extort money from her family, even after killing her,” expressed the grief-stricken family.
The family is grappling with the profound loss of Waeni, a bright and caring individual, known for her intelligence, infectious laughter, and commitment to making a positive impact on those around her.
“During this period of grief, we kindly request privacy as we mourn the loss of Waeni. Our focus is on cherishing the precious memories we shared with her and supporting each other as a family. We also appeal to the media for respect and understanding as we cope with this profound loss,” the family added.
Expressing gratitude to the DCI for their support, the family remains hopeful that justice will prevail, and those responsible for this senseless act will be held accountable.
The family appreciates the outpouring of love and support during this painful time and earnestly seeks understanding and sensitivity as they mourn the loss of their beloved Waeni.
