Fire razes buildings at Embakasi girls school

A mid-morning fire on Monday disrupted end of term exams at Embakasi Girls Secondary School.

The fire started at one of the dormitories and quickly spread to the classrooms.

The fire is suspected to have started as a result of an electric fault while the students were in classrooms.

According to one of the school’s teacher, the fire started at 10:45 a.m in one of the dormitories located near two form two classrooms.

The fire then quickly spread to two other adjacent dormitories and further to classrooms.

“The students who were in class for their end of term exams ran out of the classes ,but unfortunately the fire spread too fast and razed their two classes as well as the prefabs,” the teacher told Nairobi News on phone.

One form four classroom block is also reported to have been burnt down, although Kenya Secondary Certificate Examinations (KCSE) candidates had already finished their exams.

The fire was put off by a joint team of firefighters from Nairobi City County and the  Embakasi garrison.

Kenya Red Cross said the students who had inhaled carbon monoxide where given first aid.
