Firearm recovered from slain robbery suspect was stolen from police officer

A firearm recovered from slain robbery suspect Mr Alex Kavale Kakundi was stolen from a police officer nine years ago, Nairobi News can now report.

A sleuth attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) privy to the matter and who spoke in confidence said that the deceased stole the firearm, a Jericho pistol, which had 11 bullets from the officer in Zimmerman, Nairobi County.

The officer narrated that he was travelling in a matatu but alighted only to find the firearm missing.

“Disciplinary action was even taken against the officer who lost the gun nine years ago,” said the sleuth.

According to the detective, the officer at the time was working at Central Police Station in Nairobi but has since been transferred.

Mr Kavale was early this month among robbery suspects who had gone to allegedly steal at La Enzy Mall in South B but were spotted by officers attached to Makadara Police Station.

In a statement, the DCI said the officers concluded that the motorbike they were on was parked in a suspicious manner prompting them to keep an eye. However, Mr Kavale sensed danger and fled the scene. It is then that they started shooting randomly as the officers gave chase.

They were then slowed down by traffic which led to the fatal shooting of Mr Kavale who was laid to rest this week.

But in an interesting twist, Mr Kavale’s family attempted to conceal the cause of his death during the burial ceremony on Wednesday in Musengo Location, Kitui County.

In the condolence book, the family stated that Mr Kavale was attacked by unknown assailants who robbed and killed him.

“The deceased lived a healthy life until the fateful day on Saturday, March 3, 2023, when he met unknown assailants who roughed, robbed and killed him while he was on his way home after having fun with his friends in Githurai 45 at around 11pm. He died at the age of 35,” the family said.

However, records at City mortuary where his body was taken show that he was shot dead within Nairobi County.
