Floods, traffic chaos as heavy rains pound Nairobi
A heavy downpour in Nairobi on Sunday evening caused flooding and traffic snarl ups on major roads within the city centre and surburbs.
The rains commenced at about 5pm and lasted close to six hours.
Uhuru Highway, Moi Avenue and Kimathi Street turned were flooded by 9 p.m., resulting into heavy traffic jams.
The rains reawakened the ghosts of Nairobi’s ineffective drainage system, with pedestrians forced to remove their shoes and wade through flooding roads.
Traders selling umbrellas recorded brisk business in the city centre.
The situation was worse in the highly populated slums of Mathare and Mukuru Kwa Njenga.
The rains are expected to continue for the next month according to the meteorological department.
