Former bodyguard arrested for threat to chop off MP’s head

A former bodyguard of Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo has been arrested for threatening to kill him.

The prison constable was picked by detectives in Kisumu on Wednesday evening and transported to Nairobi.

He had served as the MP’s bodyguard until 2013 when Commissioner-General of Prisons Isaya Osugo recalled all members of his staff who had been assigned VIP protection duties.

The threats were sent to the MP on his cell phone.

One of the text messages sent to him read: “We want your head or one of your kids.”

Mr Gumbo had reported the matter at parliament police station, prompting the investigation.

Earlier in the year detectives traced the origin of of the text messages to Kibos in Kisumu, where they found the bodyguard.

But the police dropped the matter at the request of the MP, we have established.

The MP complained again after he received other texts from a different phone numbers that were also traced to the former bodyguard.

After Mr Gumbo raised the matter in parliament, he was assigned two extra police officers to protect him.
