Former Gor Mahia midfielder lands Spanish La Liga trial

Former Gor Mahia midfielder Geoffrey “Baba” Kizito could be set for a move to the Spanish La Liga.

This is after the Ugandan midfielder impressed Spanish coach Rayco Garcia with his play during his national team’s 3-0 demolition of Togo in the second round of the 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifiers in Kampala last month.

Garcia is currently in Kampala with a team of former Barcelona Legends which is set to play Uganda All Stars in a charity match this weekend.

The Spanish coach believes the Uganda international, whose style of play could be compared to former French international Patrick Viera, could fit well in Spain.

TOP TIER

He seeking to link him with top tier side Getafe for trial.

“I thought he brought balance to the Uganda team when Togo was pressing well. I have friends in Getafe, let’s see what they need from the player,” Garcia told Uganda’s Daily Monitor.

Kizito starred in midfield for Gor Mahia in his only season at the club last year and won the Kenyan Premier League title under the tutelage of both Bobby Williamson and Frank Nuttal.

He later left for Vietnam where he is currently based, and was replaced by another Ugandan Khalid Aucho who has also had a good season at K’Ogalo.

OFFER HOPE

The Spanish top flight league is rated the best in the world in terms of quality in some quarters and news that a former KPL star could be about to join the competition will not only excite many, but also offer hope to several stakeholders regarding the potential of Kenyan football.

Kenyan midfielder Mcdonald Mariga is the only East African player to have featured in the Spanish La Liga, thanks to his six month stint at Real Socieadad back in 2011.
