Gabon fans still mourning ‘robbery’ of Aubameyang
Many Gabonese believe Pierre Emerick Aubameyang was “robbed” of the 2016 Africa Player of the Year award.
Aubameyang came second to eventual winner, Algeria’s Riyad Mahrez, with Senegal’s Sadio Mane settling for third during the annual gala awards staged in Nigeria earlier this year.
“We know Aubameyang now is the best player in Africa, and don’t understand why he was robbed and the award given to that Algerian. Maybe its because Gabon is a small country, or they don’t watch German football,” Saphille, a resident in Tsenguette told Nairobi News.

Another fan said: “I believe missing out on the award has demoralised him, and that is why he didn’t play well here (at the Africa Cup of Nations). I hope he bounces back.”
Mahrez was instrumental during Leicester’s fairly tale run last season which climaxed with the English club winning the league.
Aubameyang meanwhile scored 35 goals in total last season for Borrussia Dortmund, including 25 in the Bundesliga – making him second only to Robert Lewandowski. He was also voted Bundesliga’s Player of the Year.
