Gachagua reacts to President Ruto holding Mama Rachel’s hand in US

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, also known as “Mr. Truthful Man,” brought laughter to the National Prayer Breakfast at Safari Park Hotel on Thursday, May 30.

During his speech, the DP humorously described the “pressure” President William Ruto’s recent state visit to the US had brought to Kenyan households.

Gachagua noted that during the visit, President Ruto consistently held First Lady Rachel Ruto’s hand, prompting Kenyan women to expect the same from their partners.

He shared that his own spouse, Pastor Dorcas, had insisted he follow the President’s example.

“Mr President allow me as a truthful man to tell you the truth that there was a little challenge from your trip. All Kenyans were monitoring what you were doing in the state.

There was something you did that created problems for the men. You walking around holding your wife’s hand. Our spouses led by mine, pastor Dorcas were demanding that we emulate the President and hold their hands wherever they go. She was even saying, I hold her hand in the house,” Gachagua said.

The Deputy President joked that Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi was facing similar demands.

“We call each other ‘Omwami’, he asked me if the problem had reached my house and I explained to him that I was facing the same.”

However, Gachagua said that upon returning to Kenya, he has since rectified this and no longer holds the First Lady’s hand.

He noted that the pressure had subsided, pointing out that he walked to the National Prayer Breakfast without holding Pastor Dorcas’ hand.

“I knew you would solve that problem when you come back. This morning you did that. As we welcomed you from your car to here, you were walking fast with me chatting as Mama Rachel tried to catch up with you. So the matter is sorted, that was an American thing.”

President Ruto spent four days in the US, and during his state visit, one notable act that stood out in all official ceremonies was his constant hand-holding with Mama Rachel.
