Githurai PSV operators stage strike over hijacking
Two people were killed and several others injured when gangsters hijacked a bus in Nairobi and drove it to Gatundu, Kiambu County before robbing its passengers.
Three of the injured were admitted at Gatundu Level 4 hospital following the Thursday night incident involving a bus belonging to Paradiso Transport Company.
Police said the bus left Nairobi at 9.45 pm heading to Githurai 45 with 51 passengers, but on reaching Roasters area five armed gangsters who were posing as commuters commandeered it.
The vehicle was driven to Gatitu area near Muhoho High School in Gatundu South where the gang robbed passengers and the crew of an unknown amount of money and mobile phones.
Gatundu sub-county police commander Bernard Muli said the gang was armed with knives and crow bars and that there were no signs of the use of firearms.
Among those killed was the driver who was stabbed in the chest and later succumbed to the injuries while undergoing treatment. Another passenger was thrown out of the moving bus and crushed to death.
Police have launched a hunt for the gangsters who disappeared into the dark after the robbery.
Mr. Muli said police are also appealing to members of the public to volunteer information that could lead to the arrest of the gangsters.
Two of those admitted at Gatundu hospital were later transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital on the request of family members.
The police commander said many of those injured were pushed out of the moving bus.
