Google Podcasts to discontinue in 2024

Google has announced the impending shutdown of Google Podcasts in 2024, urging its users to transition to Podcasts within the YouTube Music app.

This decision reflects Google’s commitment to aligning its services with evolving podcast listening trends and providing a more robust podcasting experience to its audience.

Citing data from Edison, Google emphasized that 23% of weekly podcast users in the United States currently prefer accessing podcasts through YouTube, while only 4% express a preference for Google Podcasts. In response to these shifting preferences, Google is determined to elevate the podcasting experience within the YouTube Music platform.

In an official release, Google expressed its enthusiasm for the forthcoming changes, stating,

“Looking forward to 2024, we’ll be increasing our investment in the podcast experience on YouTube Music—making it a better overall destination for fans and podcasters alike with YouTube-exclusive features across community engagement, content discovery, and seamless audio-visual transitions.”

As part of this transition, Google plans to discontinue Google Podcasts later in 2024 while facilitating a smooth migration process for its current users to the Podcasts feature within the YouTube Music app.

This move not only aims to cater to users’ evolving podcast preferences but also ensures the consolidation of Google’s podcasting services under a single, more versatile platform.

This strategic shift is anticipated to enhance the podcasting experience for both creators and listeners. YouTube Music, known for its vast library of music content, is poised to become a hub for all audio content, including podcasts, providing users with a one-stop destination for their audio needs.

One notable development preceding this announcement is Google’s decision, made in April of the same year, to offer podcast listening on YouTube Music without requiring a premium subscription. This move aimed to democratize podcast access, enabling all listeners to enjoy on-demand, offline, and background playback, along with seamless transitions between audio and video versions of podcasts.

While this transition is undoubtedly significant, it reflects the dynamic nature of the digital landscape and the need for companies like Google to adapt to changing consumer preferences. By leveraging the success and popularity of YouTube Music, Google aims to create a more holistic audio experience that encompasses not only music but also the ever-expanding world of podcasts.

For current Google Podcasts users, the transition to Podcasts within YouTube Music is expected to be seamless, ensuring that they retain access to their favorite podcasts while benefiting from the enhanced features and capabilities that the platform offers.
