Gor drop points, Tusker run riot

Mathare United forced a share of spoils with defending champions Gor Mahia in a highly entertaining Kenyan Premier League match on Sunday at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Gor Mahia found themselves trailing after just 30 minutes when Eric Johanna rounded Boniface Oluoch to slam the ball into an empty net.

But Meddie Kagere spared K’Ogalo the blushes late in the match with a headed goal from Enock Agwanda’s long throw in.

Gor Mahia will however rue the chances that they created and missed especially towards the end of the match.

Agwanda, who came into the match in the second half for the injured Collins Okoth, caused anxious moments for Mathare United on several occasions with his famous long throw ins.

The defending champions finished the match strongly and it took great spirited defending by Mathare to keep the score line at 1-1.

HAT TRICK HERO

In an earlier match at the same venue, Jesse Were grabbed a hat trick to inspire ten-time champions Tusker to a 5-1 win over Chemelil Sugar.

Danson Kago, the new acquisition from Sofapaka, scored his debut goal for the brewers while defender Joackins Atudo struck a wonderful free kick to complete the rout. Daniel Murage scored Chemelil’s lone goal.

Tusker coach Francis Kimanzi was however unfazed by the result, saying that ‘there was nothing to celebrate’.

“This is only compensation for the struggles we had at the start of the league. The result will however help boost the confidence of my players and I am hoping that we continue with this kind of performance,” Kimanzi said.

At the Thika County Stadium, Thika United lost their second game on the bounce going down 2-1 to Western Stima.

Tim Brytte’s charges were 2-0 losers to Gor Mahia mid-week at City Stadium.

Veteran striker Mike Baraza and John Kiplagat scored two quick fire goals for Stima in the 54th and 56th minutes before Mwinyi Kibwana came off the bench to score Thika’s consolation goal in the 80th minute.

At Awendo Green Stadium, Sony Sugar lost 1-0 to Bandari with Shaban Kenga scoring the match winner.
