Gor fight to hold onto Williamson amid Zico return rumours

With just a couple of weeks to the 2014 Kenyan Premier League season, Gor Mahia are fighting to hold onto Head Coach Bobby Williamson who has attracted the interest of Tanzanian giants Yanga.

The Scotsman has strongly been linked with Yanga in the past few days, forcing the KPL champions to offer Williamson a better deal which runs till 2017.

Speculation of Williamson’s exit has been fuelled by meetings between Chairman Ambrose Rachier and Sony Sugar Head Coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno.

K’ogalo Secretary General George Bwana has denied claims, saying Williamson is nowhere near leaving the club.

“Williamson is here to stay and we are in fact offering him a longer, better contract. We are in the process of strengthening our technical bench so all the rumours should be stopped,” said Bwana.

Williamson joined Gor Mahia mid last season after a pay increase standoff between former Coach Zdvarko Logarusic and the club that saw the former sacked.

Williamson guided Gor to their first title in 18 years in the 2013 season.

Meanwhile the future of striker Edwin Lavatsa remains unknown as Gor appear to have lost hope in having him in their 2014 squad.

The Harambee Stars striker has been linked with a move to the Middle East and is yet to put pen to paper despite being offered a new deal following the expiration of his contract in December.

Gor was in the market for another striker before the issue surrounding Lavatsa came up, which may force them to sign two strikers.

The team is in Oloitoktok for their pre-season training.

Gor will represent Kenya in the CAF Champions league set to kick off on the weekend of February 7 and 9.
