Gor Mahia cancel Uganda pre-season tour

Gor Mahia look set to cancel their pre-season tour of Uganda because the trip coincides with this year’s annual DStv Super Cup.

The former league champions had planned to set up a training camp in Kampala in January.

Indeed, a high profile friendly against newly promoted Onduparaka FC was also on the cards at the Nelson Mandela Stadium on January 28.

A club official has confirmed to Nairobi News that the plans are now in disarray because the team is intent on honoring the fixture.

Gor Mahia will play against Tusker FC in the season opening DStv Super Cup at the Moi International Sports Centre on January 29.

The winners will bag a trophy and Sh750,000, while the losers will take home half a million shillings.

TRIP IN JEOPARDY

“The Ugandan trip is now in jeopardy even though our coach was keen to see us travel there and train in a more quiet environment,” said Ronald Ngala, the club’s assistant Secretary.

However, a pre-season trip to Sudan remains on the cards for coach Jose Marcelo Ferreira and his charges.

K’Ogalo are set to start training on Tuesday and depart for Khartoum two days later for friendly matchagainst Al Hilal at Al Hilal Omdurman stadium next weekend.

Incidentally, Hilal stand between Tusker and a place in the lucrative CAF Africa Champions League group stage this season.

At the same time, seven new recruits including Rwandan midfield enforcer Jean Baptiste Mugiraneza, plus locals, KPL Player of the year Kenneth Muguna, wing wizard John Ndirangu, and former Ushuru keeper Shaban Odhoji will make up Gor’s new squad for the 2017 season, which Ngala insists is all out to reclaim the league title.

Other new players in the squad are Oliver Maloba, Alpha Onyango and Philemon Otieno.
