Gor Mahia fan to serve six months for hooliganism
A Gor Mahia football club fan was on Tuesday sentenced to six months in prison for assaulting a security officer during the club’s friendly match with Power Dynamo club of Zambia at Nyayo national stadium last Sunday.
Boaz Akello stunned the court when he pleaded guilty to the charges and boldly said that he did not mind any punishment the court deemed fit.
“ I’m guilty. I don’t have anything to tell the court. I am ready for any punishment,” Akello told the court when asked to mitigate.
WITHOUT TICKETS
The court heard that on February 1 this year, Akello assaulted Mr Jeremiah Opiyo, a security officer, when a group of fans tried to access Nyayo stadium without tickets.
The prosecution told the court that Akello hit Mr Opiyo with a metal bar on the forehead and injured him.
A P3 form was produced in court as evidence.
In his sentence, Kibera Principal Magistrate Benard Ochoi noted that football hooliganism has been on the rise and those found guilty should be punished within the law.
“The accused has not shown remorse and he deserves a penalty befitting his behaviour. I will not give him the option of a fine. He will serve a jail term of six months in prison,” Mr Ochoi said.
