Gor Mahia fans set ablaze two vehicles after fatal road accident
Protestors, believed to be fans of Gor Mahia set ablaze two vehicles – including a County Government van – in Nairobi’s CBD on Wednesday evening, after one of them was run over by the vehicle.
The incident which occurred along Moi Avenue near the Kenya National Archives building at around 7:30pm, caused huge traffic snarl up, as crowds milled around the spot.
Trouble started when a group of fans believed to be allied to Gor Mahia, who were matching towards town to celebrate the team’s 2-0 win against Ushuru FC earlier in the day, got run over by a County Government vehicle – leaving one dead and the other seriously injured.
The fans retaliated by pelting stones at the vehicle, before rolling it over and setting it ablaze.
Another private vehicle which was caught up in the melee was also set ablaze.
“They have killed one of our own and we have decided to teach them a lesson,” one of the fans told Nairobi News at the scene.
The Nairobi County Government later released a statement with Deputy Governor Jonathan Mueke calling for public restraint.
Both the Kenyan Premier League and Gor Mahia officials refused to comment on the matter in the wake of the incident.
