Gor Mahia held by Ulinzi in build up match

Gor Mahia on Saturday warmed up for next weekend’s African Champions League clash with Congolese giants AC Leopards with a dour barren draw against top tier league side Ulinzi  Stars at the Nairobi City Stadium.

Gor Mahia’s head coach Frank Nuttall stuck to his usual first eleven against a physical Ulinzi side. Both sides played cautiously in the first interval with neither exhibiting a thirst for victory.

“It was a tough game against a tough opponent. It is a good build up match ahead of the weekend game and it will give the boys a chance to recover from the knocks as we have an entire week. But we expect a tough match against AC Leopards,” Nuttal said.

Ulinzi coach Robert Matano was impressed by his team’s performance.

TOUGH GAME

“It was a tough game but there is still room for improvement,” he said.

The contest watched by hundreds of fans, created limited chances in either side of the half, but George ‘Blackberry’ Odhiambo gave a standout performance for Gor Mahia.

Elsewhere, Tusker triumphed 3-1 over Kenya Commercial Bank in another warm up match at the Ruaraka grounds.

Andrew Tololwa, Stephen Owusu and Jesse Were were on target for the brewers before Raymond Murugi pulled a late consolation for the bankers via a penalty after Tusker’s left back Aboud Omar handled the ball in the box.
