Gor Mahia on a roll, Tusker, Sofapaka drop points


Defending champions Gor Mahia extended their winning streak in the Kenyan Premier League to three matches by beating visiting Chemelil Sugar 3-1 at the Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday.

Khalid Aucho netted his first goal of the season with a beautiful strike from the edge of the box. Meddie Kagere and Ali Abondo were Gor’s other goal scorers with Meshack Karani grabbing the sugar millers a consolation goal.

K’Ogalo appeared sluggish in the opening moments of the game but shift their gears as the game progressed with a solid performance.

In the 41st minute, Aucho connected with a cross from the left wing for the opening goal.

The defending champions began the second half in the same tempo with Abondo doubling the lead shortly after the restart with a left footed strike.

Meshach Karani reduced the deficit in the in the 85th minute after being set up by Dennis Onkangi, but there was still time put the result beyond doubt from a rebound.

In an earlier match at the same venue, Tusker lost 1-0 to Ushuru with Robert Omunuk scoring the all-important goal five minutes into the match after some sloppy defending by the brewers.

Tusker coach Francis Kimanzi blamed the loss on extended break in the league but remained confident that his team would bounce back.

“The three week break from league action has really taken a toll on my boys. I cannot judge the league by this one match. I am sure that we shall pick up in subsequent matches,” said coach Kimanzi.

At the Ruaraka Sports Club, GOtv Shield champions Sofapaka were forced to a 2-2 draw with Bandari.

The dockers took a fourth minute lead through former Nairobi City Stars man George Abege but Batoto ba Mungu responded in the 22nd minute through the ageless striker John Baraza.

The goal shifted momentum Sofapaka’s way with Enock Agwanda giving them the lead four minutes later. But Abege struck later on to ensure Bandari got a share of the spoils in the nervy encounter.

Ulinzi Stars resumed their Kenya Premier League campaign with a 1-0 win over Western Stima at Afraha Stadium in Nakuru.

Robert Matano’s men grabbed the all-important goal of the match in the 29th minute through John Makwata’s fierce drive from the top of the box.
