The lakeside city of Kisumu was thrown into a carnival mood on Sunday afternoon as Gor Mahia were presented with the Kenyan Premier League trophy at Moi Stadium.

Gor Mahia players, officials and fans momentarily forgot the cash flow troubles the team has endured in recent weeks as they basked in the glory of their success this season.

Opposition leader Raila Odinga, who also the club’s patron, handed over the giant trophy to captain Harun Shakava as thousands of fans in the stadium erupted into celebrations. Each player was also handed a title-winning medal.

“It was a deserved title. This victory was the one we fought hardest to achieve,” Shakava said after the match.

“I am proud of the team, my players and wish to thank everyone for their support towards us achieving this feat,” said Gor coach Dylan Kerr.
