Gor put five past All Stars, KCB stun Tusker

Kenyan Premier League leaders Gor Mahia produced yet another sparkling performance on Sunday trouncing Nakuru All Stars 5-0 at the Nyayo National Stadium.

At City Stadium, 10-time champions Tusker were piped 1-0 by lowly KCB while Rwandan Abdul Fiston inspired Sofapaka to a 2-1 win over Sony Sugar at Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos.

Meddie Kagere scored twice to stretch his goal tally to eight goals, same as Ali Abondo, who added another goal together with Michael Olunga and Harun Shakava in the second to complete the rout.

All Stars tried to fight back by carrying the ball to the K’Ogalo half as often as the could but full backs Abouba Sibomana and Karim Nzigiyimana allowed them only one shot on target throughout the first half.

Abondo and Kagere sounded the early warning with two decent effort that didn’t trouble All Stars goalkeeper Shayne Indimuli.

But it was during the three minutes of time added on in the first half when Kagere tore past his markers to meet Sibomana’s cross which he smashed home on the near post.

All Stars pressed the self-destruct button when coach Peter Okidi switched defender Amon Muchiri for midfielder Meshak Chakali, a move that eventually worked to the opponent’s favour. In the three minutes that followed, All Stars had conceded three goals.

Sibomana produced a second assist in the 70th minute when he floated the ball in the way of the gangly Olunga who headed past the poorly positioned Indimuli.

All Stars defender Elias Kipkemboi was at fault for one of the goals when he pulled down Olunga inside the restricted area, and Abondo calmly converted the spot kick.

Kagere completed his brace in the 76th, minute with a breath taking goal netted after he dispossessed custodian Indimuli.

Shakava had the last word of the match two minutes before stoppage time when he headed in Abondo’s corner.

“Our opponents worked very hard and I was worried before the first goal came. I am however happy and satisfied with the result, and I can only hope that we continue to give the fans these kind of performances,” Gor coach Frank Nuttall said.

Earlier on Sunday, Cord leader Raila Odinga called on local football administrators to devise alternative income generating models for their institutions.

While speaking during the launch of Gor Mahia FC’s Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisation (SACCO), the former Prime Minister also emphasised the need to adopt professionalism in management of the institutions.

“We are not in that era for example, where a significant amount of a (sporting) team’s budget is recouped from gate collections. Let’s try and sell merchandise, talk to sponsors, start up businesses where club fans can indirectly invest in the team and still receive their worth in terms of goods and services,” Odinga said.
The statement by the opposition leader comes days after he was called upon to bail out AFC Leopards players who had been detained in a Mombasa hotel.
Gor Mahia Sacco is aimed at enabling its members, a majority of whom are drawn from the club’s fan base and the diaspora, to benefit from a host of financial services that include investment opportunities, loans and insurance services.
“The Sacco will be operated professionally and independently from the club. This is an innovation that symbolizes our resilience and creativity as Kenyans in solving our problems that face us today,” Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier said.
A fifth of the Sh 500 membership fees payable to the Sacco will directly be channeled to the club under a defined social responsibility framework.
