Government bans political rallies in schools
The government has banned political rallies in learning institutions and the use of school buses to ferry crowds to political rallies.
Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i directed school heads to adhere to the new measures meant to ensure safety of learners and school property.
“We should not create unnecessary anxiety and disruption of school programmes by allowing political rallies in schools,” he said.
The Education CS was speaking to over 200 school heads from Gucha South sub-county at Nduru Boys High School in Kisii County.
He distributed over Sh25 million to various schools in the sub-county for infrastructure development.
He said he had already consulted with major education stakeholders and he would soon hold a major press conference to announce the rules.
He added that a circular will be released to ensure the directive is implemented.
POLITICAL VIOLENCE
While warning school heads against involving themselves in politics at the cost of delivering their services, Dr Matiang’i said schools that will serve as polling stations will be officially handed over to Independent Election and Boundary Commission (IEBC) after August 4.
“The schools will become IEBC property after learners break for August holidays,” he said.
“We want to secure our children’s future. They should not be victims of political violence, which we have seen occurring across the country,” he said.
He said principals should focus on service delivery, which will in future be used as merit for promotion.
Dr Matiang’i said he would not relent in ensuring credible performance, saying allocation of resources will from next year be based on performance.
He said the ministry will first consider equipping best performing schools.
The Education CS warned against transportation of pupils at night, saying no transportation should take place after 5pm.
