Exposed, government now clears Uchumi House rent
The Government has reportedly moved in to clear rent arrears owed to a landlord in Nairobi, hours after Nairobi News broke the news of the embarrassing situation.
As exclusively reported on this site on Wednesday morning, the owners of Uchumi House, which houses hundreds of civil servants employed by the Ministry of Sports, Culture and the Arts, had kept the government offices under key and lock over accrued rent arrears estimated to run into millions of shillings.
A spot-check by Nairobi News had confirmed that indeed the third and eleventh floors, which are occupied by the Sports Ministry, were inaccessible to the tenants.
However, the Ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Edward Olem, called Nairobi News on Wednesday evening to clarify that the everything had been settled.
“Treasury has released the funds amounting to Sh 5.7 million. All public servants located at Uchumi House should therefore report to work tomorrow (Thursday),” Olem said.
The employees at the Ministry are said to have been unable to access the offices since Monday.
