Governor Gladys Wanga rewards personal lawyer with top county job
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has rewarded her lawyer Fredrick Orego by appointing him as the county attorney.
Mr Orego was sworn in to office on May 31, 2023, in an event witnessed by the governor and her deputy Oyugi Magwanga.
The event was held at the governor’s office and presided over by High Court Advocate Nancy Nyarige.
Prior to his appointment as the county attorney, Mr Orego served as a lawyer.
He is a renowned lawyer and has made a name for handling election related disputes matters.
He represented the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) five years ago in a case which Mr Magwanga filed a petition claiming he won the Homa Bay gubernatorial election.
Mr Orego’s latest assignment in Homa Bay was to defend the victory of Ms Wanga and Mr Magwanga.
Former Nairobi governor Evans Kidero who was in the race to take over the governor seat after Cyprian Awiti claimed he was denied victory.
Mr Orego was among advocates in court to deny the claims on behalf of the governor.
Others on the same team were Charles Kanjama and Andrew Mumah.
The team won the case in which High Court judge Roseline Aburili ruled that the governor was rightfully elected.
He also participated in other legal matters after Ms Wanga’s victory was upheld.
Mr Orego was also in the limelight ahead of the general election.
He served as the chairman of the ODM appeals tribunal during the party primaries.
His role was to listen to and address disputes in how the nomination exercise was conducted in the Orange party when two or more politicians claimed to have been shortchanged in the nomination process.
Ms Wanga described the advocate as a very capable individual.
She expressed confidence that the lawyer will deliver as the county attorney.
His main roles will be to address legal matters affecting the country including petitions against the government.
Mr Orego on his part expressed gratitude to the governor for having faith in him and promised to discharge his duties diligently.
