Governor Kivutha embarrasses provincial administration on Twitter
Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana has called out the provincial administration for taking the IDs of senior citizens.
Kivutha tweeted photos of the meeting during which he alleged IDs of residents above the age of 70 were taken by government officials.
He went on to claim that the elderly people are to meet Health Cabinet Secretary Cleopa Mailu next week.
Prof Kivutha’s tweet also had him seeking for an explanation from the government on why the IDs of these elderly people were taken.
Found Provincial Admins collecting ID of those over 70. CS Maillu is to come talk them next week. Government come clean on this. @IEBCKenya pic.twitter.com/Do0uZxRSu0

The tweet elicited mixed reactions online with some users terming Kivutha’s tweet as alarmist claiming that the elderly people were being registered in the government support programme.
Government critics however supported the governor’s concerns stating that the registration should have waited a few more weeks so that the elderly residents can use their IDs in the upcoming election.
This is Inua Jamii Cash Programme. Has been in existence and disbursing monthly stipends to those registered and aged 70+yrs since 2014.

Registration could have been done after elections. They are not getting any cash till January 2018 anyway.

So because it’s elections time the government should stop all programmes. Some pple never be leaders in kenya because theirs is politicking

The Govt will reimburse planned cash to the elderly as from January 2018… Hii story ya bring your ID might render some unable to vote

There’s no need to collect IDs. Their data should be in IPRS meaning all that is needed is verification via biometrics. Something’s off here

BTW, Why not take photos of the ID’ & the owners for processing instead of taking the physical doc? What if they get misplaced? Digital ama?

I found out the registration is happening in my county which is jubilee dominated. Let’s stop reading malice even where positive things are

#Inuajamii70 wrong timing for registration. Could have been done after elections @maina_itume @Georkam
— Marion Ouma (@MarionOuma) July 6, 2017
ooooh so they can keep postponing the meeting until after 8/8? A list will do as good. This is very suspect!

They should take photocopy and return the original ID, something fishy behind this initiative

With all due respect Gov’nor, have you heard of Inua Jamii program or you want Kyalo’s grandpa to continue suffering?
