Governor Nyong’o in good health after surgery


Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has revealed details of his surgery by a surgeon who flew into the country from Atlanta in the United States.

The governor, who is serving his second term, that the surgery was conducted by Dr Bethwel Raore at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital.

Governor Nyong’o said he was admitted into the facility on Friday, July 14, 2023, just two days after leading a demonstration in Kisumu County. He said he was discharged the following day and he is now recuperating at home.

“Everything has gone extremely well and I am grateful to the hospital CEO, Dr George Rae and his team for taking very good care of me,” he said in a statement.

The Governor said the team that proved that even with adequate skill development, complex surgeries can be performed successfully even in the country.

He revealed that the team has been visiting the hospital on a regular basis in the last five years and that his government was grateful for that.

“The ICU nurses were very caring and professional, especially Nurse Vincent Odingo. The ICU doctor, Dr Babu was on hand to receive me and advice on my care,” he said.

He also lauded Dr Mary Oguta, a neurosurgeon, for always guiding the patients on what they should eat especially in the first 24 hours after undergoing surgery.

“This has given me tremendous relief on my nerves, which were being compressed by tissue stenosis in a condition known as Cauda Equina Syndrome,” he said.

He asked the county’s County Executive for Health and Medical Services Dr Gregory Ganda and Dr Rae to continue enhancing the health services in Kisumu County.

“It is now very clear to me that even with the existing resources, both human and technical, we have the capacity to treat conditions that we sometimes shy away from and end up spending huge personal resources elsewhere,” he said.
