Governor Obado rushed to Kenyatta Hospital after falling ill in prison

Migori Governor Okoth Obado was on Wednesday night admitted to Kenyatta National Hospital’s private wing after falling ill in remand.

Mr Obado was taken ill at the Industrial Area Remand Prison and taken to the hospital at around 12pm, acting Clinical Services Director Peter Masinde said.

“He is sick, but not in critical condition,” Dr Masinde said, adding that he is not allowed to give details of what the governor is suffering from.

Mr Obado’s lawyer Cliff Ombeta, when contacted, could also not reveal what his client was suffering from, only saying that he had been unwell while in remand.

“I’ll be going to his house to confirm what the position is. As of now, I don’t know what exactly he could be suffering from,” Mr Ombeta told the Nation on the phone.

SWELLINGS ON FACE

He added: “But he has been unwell and he had swellings on the face and other parts of the body. I think he was reacting to the cold. He has also been having a back problem since 2013.”

Mr Obado has been in police custody since last week after he was charged with the murder of Rongo University student Sharon Otieno.

He is charged with killing Ms Otieno between September 3 and 4 at Owade in Rachuonyo, Homa Bay County.

The charge sheet stated that he committed the offence with others not before the court. Last week, a judge rejected his application to be released on bond.

Justice Jessie Lessit said the court was yet to see the witness statements and documentary evidence to be used in the case to make a determination as to whether it was okay to free him on bond.
