Granny in coma after rape ordeal in her house

By LUCY MKANYIKA February 21st, 2018 2 min read

A 71-year-old grandmother is fighting for her life at Wesu hospital in Wundanyi, Taita Taveta County after a rape ordeal at her home in Lushangonyi village.

The woman was found by her neighbours dumped outside her house and rushed to the hospital for treatment.

According to her daughter, the woman is still in critical condition after being admitted at the hospital on Saturday last week.

“She is still in a coma and her situation continues to deteriorate day by day,” she said.

She said her mother was alone on that fateful night.

The granny lives with her granddaughter who on that particular night had spent the night at her mother’s home a few kilometres away.

“The neighbours called me and I rushed home to take her to hospital,” the daughter narrated to the Daily Nation.

“I suspected that she might have been sexually abused and indeed the doctor confirmed my fears. Since then she has been receiving treatment but so far no improvements,” she said.

She said the woman also suffered injuries on her neck and thighs.

“The assailant(s) took advantage of her and it seems she was strangled because her neck is swollen. It seems they wanted to prevent her from wailing for help during the ordeal,” she said.

She said the hospital has referred her to Coast General Hospital in Mombasa for a head scan but the family can not afford the sh12, 000 charges due to financial constraints.

She asked well-wishers to help raise the money for them to be able to take their mother to Mombasa for the scan.

Police in Wundanyi said they have launched investigations into the incident.

Wundanyi OCPD Benjamin Muhia said they were waiting for the granny to regain her consciousness for statement to be recorded.

“For now we are continuing with our investigations and we will arrest the culprits soon,” he said.

Last year, a woman was raped and killed in the same village. Her body was found dumped in a forest with multiple injuries on her head.
