Green Army to lay siege on Kigali as Gor Mahia, Rayon Sports clash

Hundreds of Gor Mahia fans have embarked on a 1,200km road trip to Kigali, Rwanda ahead for the team’s encounter with Rayon Sport in a group stage match of Caf Confederation Cup on Sunday.

In what should also be a classic case of sports tourism, most of these fans commenced the 36 hour road trip on hired buses on Friday morning.

The impending arrival of the noisy and passionately loyal K’Ogalo fans in Kigali however is the least of worries for the host team’s coach Ivan Minnaert.

“I have no fear for Gor Mahia. The chase for the ticket to the quarter-finals starts Sunday and we cannot afford a false start. Like in all our home games, we are going to do everything possible to get a win,”said Minnaert, who has previously coached AFC Leopards.

The journey will take the Green Army through either Busia or Malaba border, through Uganda’s capital Kampala, Mbarara town, and Gatuna town on the Uganda-Rwanda border and eventually to Kigali.

SPONSORED TRIP

Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja is among politicians who sponsored the trip for the travelling fans who are using Mash and Modern Coast buses.

A Nairobi-Kigali return trip by bus costs approximately Sh10,000.

On Saturday, some of the travelling fans were spotted feasting on roast chicken at the famous Mabira forest joint, some 90km away from Kampala.

This delicacy costs about UGX1500 (about Sh70) a piece.

Meanwhile, Gor Mahia’s first team, led by club chairman Ambrose Rachier and coach Dylan Kerr, left for Kigali by air on Saturday morning.

Tanzanian champions Yanga and Algeria’s USM Algiers are the other teams in Gor Mahia’s group.

The top two teams from each of the four groups at this stage of the tournament will proceed to the quarter finals with Sh35million on offer as an extra incentive.
