By Winnie Mabel October 25th, 2022 2 min read

The United States of America’s Diversity Immigrant Visa, popularly known as Green Card, topped Kenyans’ internet searches in the past 30 days.

According to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services official website, this is a program that makes available 50,000 immigrant visas annually, drawn from random selection among all entries to individuals who are from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States.

Most lottery winners reside outside the United States and immigrate through consular processing and issuance of an immigrant visa.

To be eligible for this program, they must ensure they have been selected for a diversity visa by the American Department of State, must have an immigrant visa immediately available when filing an adjustment application, and are admissible to the United States of America.

The process requires an applicant to fill in Form I-485, which contains information such as the edition date, where to file, when to file, the filing fee, a checklist of required initial evidence, and special instructions.

The American Immigration Services also requires an applicant to complete the adjustment of status process for diversity visa winners by September 30 of the fiscal year the lottery pertains to. Visas cannot be carried over to the next fiscal year.

A stern fraud warning is also issued to applicants regarding scammers who send out emails claiming you’ve won the Diversity Visa (Green Card) lottery. Applicants are also warned not to send money to anyone telling them they have won the lottery.
