Guard public plots, Uhuru tells Nairobians
President Kenyatta has asked Nairobians to stand up against grabbers of public land, irrespective of their position in the society.
The President said Nairobians should defend public property, including school plots, without fear.
“Kila mtu ni mkubwa (Every person is important),” he said.
He challenged people who want to amass wealth to do so in the right way instead of going for public property.
Mr Kenyatta was speaking on Wednesday at Ruai Primary School in Nairobi during the launch of the Tusome literacy programme.
RAISED CONCERN
Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko and former Embakasi MP Ferdinand Waititu had raised concern that several properties, including land belonging to public schools and markets, had been hived off by private developers.
Mr Sonko said Kamukunji Secondary School, Embakasi Girls High School, Buruburu Girls High School and St Catherine South B School were some of the affected institutions.
He urged the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission to take action to reclaim the property.
Two weeks ago, pupils at Lang’ata Road Primary School in Nairobi protested at the institution to reclaim their playground that had been irregularly acquired by a private developer.
The corrupt land dealings were perpetuated by county government officials acting with impunity, Mr Sonko said.
“Suspension of such officers at the county government is not enough as they are the source of all our problems.”
