Hawkers sue County Hall
Hawkers operating at Uhuru and Central parks have obtained a temporary order blocking a decision by the county Government to evict them.
Justice George Odunga allowed them to institute proceedings seeking to quash the decision against the Secretary of the county government and director of environment.
The traders claim they among 12 individuals authorised to conduct business at the parks. They are also seeking an order to stop the government from allocating their trading spaces to other people.
The hawkers claim on January 14 County Hall in an effort to weed out the unauthorised hawkers conducted a ballot-based vetting which they say was unlawful and led to the decison to evict them.
Mr Paul Mutua said they have been conducting their business at Uhuru and Central parks since 2001 having been nominated and subsequently obtained licenses from the City Council of Nairobi.
“We have always complied with the terms and conditions of County Hall as a licensing authority by obtaining and paying for renewal of our licenses as required by law,” said Mr Mutua.
