Health CS Mailu visits separated conjoined twins

Health Cabinet Secretary Cleopa Mailu on Tuesday visited the conjoined twins who were separated at the Kenyatta National Hospital.

The twins, Blessing and Favour, who are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for the eighth day are said to be recovering well.

A team of specialists ranging from pediatric and plastic surgeons as well as anesthetics drawn from the referral hospital and the University of Nairobi School of Health Sciences separated the twins in a 23-hour three phased surgery.

SUCCESSFULLY SEPARATED

Cs Mailu visited the twins at the ICU on Tuesday and met their mother Caroline Mukiri.

He appreciated the team that successfully separated the twins who had been joined at the lower back since birth.

The surgery’s preparation took 2 years as the twins were admitted at the hospital’s Specialized Surgical Pediatric Ward to allow development of key organs and also enable them gain appropriate muscles to withstand the surgery.

It will go down in history as the first ever sarcophagus surgery in Africa.
