How do you rate Sonko’s achievements in 2018?

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko’s tenure in 2018 was characterised by more unmet promises than delivered pledges, though to be fair to him he still has four more years to go.

His standout failures included his inability to decongest the city by getting rid of Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) from the city centre and fixing the drainage system as promised.

He however managed to complete a number of projects.

Below are the governor’s achievements in 2018.

1. Rehabilitation of roads

From fixing potholes with the patching machine to recarpeting some estate roads, the Governor managed to get some roads in a better condition. The Kenya Urban Roads Authority also assisted the governor in fixing Nairobi roads that were in their jurisdiction.

2. Nairobi beautification project
Uhuru Highway has indeed been a sight to be proud of this year. The flowers and new grass planted are thriving and the roundabouts now have a sense of landscaping. It however remains to be seen if the beauty shall be topped up by the much needed decongestion of the same highway.

3. Rehabilitation of street children
Street children were in February flushed out of the city centre and transfered to rehabilitation centres in Makadara, Kayole, Joseph Kangethe, Shauri Moyo and Bahati. Though some made it back to the CBD, there are children who have agreed to be rehabilitated. Some were able to sit for their KCPE exams and were issued with full scholarships by the county.

4. Upgrading medical centres
Though not a medical centre, Mbagathi Hospital received a Renal Unit from the county government in March during the World Kidney Day. Kayole 2 Sub-County hospital had a maternity wing facelift, while Mukuru slums Medical Center recently received some modern maternity hospital beds and ultra sound scan printer.
