A businessman who nearly killed a man he suspected of having an affair with his wife is facing assault charges.

Mr Elly Odhiambo Olang’o has been charged with causing grievous harm to Kenneth Wainaina Kamande after he attacked him with a metal bar at Nairobi’s Nyayo Estate in Embakasi on February 16, 2023.

Mr Olang’o is also facing charges of maliciously damaging the windscreen and passenger windows of Mr Kamande’s car.

Mr Kamande was dropping Mr Olang’o’s wife home in the estate at around 1am after spending time with her at a restaurant in Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) until midnight.

It is as he was dropping her off around 1am that Mr Olang’o, who had been looking for his wife in the estate, charged at the vehicle prompting Mr Kamande to speed off with the woman still inside the car.

But Mr Olang’o got into his car and pursued them to the gate where he caught with Mr Kamande. He allegedly descended on Mr Kamande with a metal bar, in the process shattering the car’s windows and windscreen.

He also reportedly struck Mr Kamande on the finger and below the knee. Mr Kamande sustained a deep cut on his leg.

Police officers later visited the scene and arrested the suspect.

Mr Kamande sought treatment and later reported the incident at Embakasi Police Station where he recorded a statement.

Through his lawyer, Mr Olang’o denied the charges before Senior Principal Magistrate Mary Njagi of Makadara Law Courts and pleaded for lenient bail and bond terms.

He said he is not a flight risk as the police know his residence, adding that he has been cooperative during investigations.

The accused was released on a bond of Sh200,000 with a surety of a similar amount and an alternative cash bail of Sh100,000. The case will be mentioned on March 28, 2023 before hearing starts on September 19, 2023.
