How three robbers walked away with Sh30m in Equity bank heist
Three men posing as auditors stole Sh30 million on Friday morning from Equity bank, Othaya branch, in a robbery.
The smartly dressed trio posed as auditors from Equity bank head office in Nairobi sent to inspect the books at the branch. They even flashed fake identification cards at the branch’s managers to prove that they were genuine Equity bank employees.
Police sources have given a blow by blow account of how the three men reportedly gained access to the bank through the rear entrance at around 6 a.m.
They found the branch’s deputy manager whom they informed that they had been authorized to carry out auditing at the branch.
KITCHEN KNIFE
They are said to have moved around the bank pretending to be inspecting but nobody suspected any foul play.
The deputy manager was then pinned to the wall with a kitchen knife and ordered to unlock the cash vault.
“They took out the cash and even counted it,” said our source who sought anonymity.
Regional police commander Larry Kieng’ said no arrests have been made so far.
“The matter is under investigation and we have identified some crucial leads. No arrests have been made so far,” said the police boss.
