A three-year-old child died on Thursday night in a fire incident inside their house in Kibera slums, Nairobi County.

According to the police, the matter was reported by Raila Slums, Mr Charles Owino, who said that he received a call at 7:40am alerting him of a fire breakout in the area.

By the time police officers arrived at the scene, members of the public had already contained the fire but had found the lifeless body of Favour Rioba in what used to be their house.

The police said the child’s mother, Ms Caren Rioba, 23, before the incident happened, had earlier on in the day left her house for her sister’s place to seek financial support.

“She alleged that she had left the house and went to her sister to ask money to buy food and on her way back she noticed her house was on fire,” the police said in a report.

The scene was processed by officers before the child’s body was taken to the Nairobi City Mortuary. The cause of the fire is yet to be established.
