How to stay warm and dry in this cold and rainy season

According to the Kenya Meteorological Department, the country will experience consistent rainfall between November 2023 and April 2024.

Kenyans have had to put up with heavy rains and chilly weather since October 2023.

Rains in Nairobi come with several challenges, including heavy motor vehicle traffic, flash floods, and burst sewer pipes, among others.

Amid these soggy conditions, here are some valuable tips to help you stay warm and dry during this season:

Dress in layers

To keep warm, layer your clothing. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from your skin, add insulating layers like sweaters or fleece, and finish with a waterproof outer layer to repel rain.

Don’t forget waterproof gear

Invest in a good-quality waterproof jacket or raincoat to shield yourself from the rain. Carry an umbrella, as well, to stay dry while walking outdoors.

Warm beverages

Sipping on hot beverages like tea, coffee, or hot chocolate can provide internal warmth and comfort. Many cafes in Nairobi offer delightful options for you to enjoy.

Seek shelter

If you find yourself caught in a sudden downpour, look for shelter under building eaves, bus stops, or even in your car. These can provide temporary refuge until the rain subsides.

Cozy accessories

Don’t forget warm accessories like scarves, gloves, and a snug hat to retain heat. These small additions can make a big difference in your comfort.

Keep your feet dry

Wear waterproof or water-resistant footwear to prevent soggy feet. Wet shoes can be a recipe for discomfort in rainy weather.

Plan ahead

If possible, plan your outdoor activities when the weather is more favorable. Keeping an eye on weather forecasts can help you avoid being caught unprepared.
