Husband and wife charged with ‘faking’ death
A man and his wife accused of faking his death so as to claim compensation from an insurance company were charged on Monday.
Mr Ezekiel Ochieng Ogoma and Ms Rachel Adhiambo Omondi faced 13 counts of conspiracy to defraud, forgery and attempting to obtain money by false pretences.
They were accused of conspiracy to obtain Sh634,936 from Pan African Life Assurance Company by pretending that Mr Ogoma died on February 28, 2013.
They were charged with another count of forging a register of death purporting it had been signed by Gombe sub-location assistant chief to confirm that the man had died.
They were further accused of forging a police abstract form dated February 28, 2013, alleging it was a genuine one issued by the officer commanding Yala police station confirming a road accident in which Mr Ogoma “died”.
The couple denied all the charges before a senior principal magistrate Ms Lucy Mbugua.
Ms Adhiambo was separately charged with producing a forged death certificate to Mr Bethuel Muturi Mwangi of Pan Africa Assurance in September 25, 2013 indicating that Mr Ogoma had died.
She was further accused of forging a letter from Sagam Community Hospital to confirm that her husband had died at the institution. She faced additional counts of forging a police abstract form and the chiefs letter.
The magistrate released them on a cash bail of Sh2 million each. Mention will be in two weeks.
The prosecution has listed eight witnesses.
