I would love to visit Lamu and the Mara, says Obama

The Maasai Mara and the beaches of Lamu County are President Obama’s favourite Kenyan destinations.

Asked which Kenyan attractions he wished to visit, President Obama mentioned the Mara and Lamu.

“I would still love to go to Maasai Mara and Lamu, they are magical,” he said Sunday in an exclusive interview with Capital FM at Kenyatta University.

Top on my list

“Lamu is a place I would be interested in visiting again. It is top on my list. I went with Michelle after our engagement and I remember taking the dhow going for fishing and cooking the fish right at the beach,” he told Capital FM’s Olive Burrows. “It was remarkable.”

The US leader’s mention of the two attractions is an important endorsement of Kenya as a tourist destination, since the tourism sector is trying to overcome challenges, including travel warnings and threats of terrorism.

Mr Obama was keen not to sideline other destinations in the region, saying climbing Mt Kilimanjaro “is top on my to-do list but the Secret Service does not like me climbing mountains”.
