Infotrack: Kenyans not convinced Ruto is God fearing

By Wangu Kanuri February 28th, 2023 2 min read

Kenyans appear not quite convinced that President William Ruto is a God-fearing and religious man.

This is despite the Head of State carrying a Bible, quoting it consistently, and attending church services every other weekend.

Research done by Infrotrak shows five percent of Kenyans believe President Ruto, who is serving his first term in office, is God-fearing and religious.

“We only have 5% of Kenyans who think President Ruto is God fearing,” an Infotrack representative pointed out at a press briefing on February 28, 2023.

President Ruto’s love for the church commenced in earnest in 2017.

At the time when he had trained his eyes on succeeding Uhuru Kenyatta as president ahead of an impending fallout between the two, he mostly visited churches in Central Kenya each weekend where he handed out contributions to youth and women groups.

After the church services, the clergy granted the Head of State and his allies opportunities to address the congregation.

This they did, while mostly articulating government policies and bashing out at their political opponents.

At some point, President Ruto was forced to defend himself against the frequent church visits and donations, saying; “Some have a problem about how often we go to church, others have accused us of carrying money to the church but we will not stop.”

President Ruto has more or less intensified the his relationship with the church upon winning the presidential polls in August 2022.

He has moved around the country attending thanksgiving prayers alongside Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

And the script has remained the same as after the services, the President and his allies will likely hit out at Azimio leader Raila Odinga, accusing him and former president Uhuru Kenyatta of running down the country’s economy, corruption and destabilizing the government through demonstrations.

At the same time, first Lady Rachel Ruto has rubber-stamped the position of the church in the government saying that she is using faith diplomacy to empower Kenyan women.

Mama Rachel has also held meetings with the men of the cloth at State House.

President Ruto and Mama Rachel have held prayers to cleanse State House, and bring rain to the country.
