Inside Nairobi County’s car loans, mortgage scheme to staff
A section of Nairobi County government employees will now have access to car and mortgage loans following a fruitful engagement between the Executive and County Assembly led by the Delegated Committee.
On October 31, 2023, the County Assembly Delegated Committee under the leadership of Nasra Nanda received a green light from the County Executive Committee Member in charge of Finance and Planning, Mr Charles Kerich, regarding the car loan and mortgage facilitation.
The meeting came following a letter dated October 19, 2023, from the Acting County Secretary Mr Patrick Analo to the Clerk of the County Assembly Mr Edward Gichana, asking him to operationalize the Nairobi City County Executive Car Loan and Mortgage Scheme Fund.
The objective of the fund is to provide loans for a member for the purchase, development, renovation, or repair of immovable property, the purchase of a motor vehicle, and refinance.
In the financial year 2023/2024, the scheme has a Sh100 million kitty, and the county has stated that the allocated amount is not enough, hence, the need to increase the fund in subsequent financial years.
“The committee is projecting a maximum of one billion by the end of the first term of five years,” Ms Nasra said in a letter that has been approved by the Acting County Secretary.
Ms Nasra, who is the Nominated member of the County Assembly lauded the move, terming it as a reprieve to county employees who have been for long sidelined even as they desire to own cars and mortgages.
Qualified employees for the fund
The employees who qualify for the fund include salaried County Executive State or public officers including CECs, an employee on contract serving in the Executive arm being either a County Secretary, Chief Officer, or Member of the County Public Service Board, an employee on a permanent and pensionable basis serving in the Executive arm, an employee seconded from the National Government to public office in the Executive arm of the County, and an officer employed on contract basis by the Executive arm.
