‘It is a reign of terror!’ Martha Karua on Matiang’i’s home raid

NARC-Kenya party leader Martha Karua has weighed in on former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i’s home raid saying that all Kenyans of goodwill should resist it.

In a series of tweets, Karua claimed that the country was experiencing a reign of terror worse than the dark days adding that raiding Matiang’i’s home was proof of it.

Further, Karua shared that the constitution had not been suspended, nor can it be wished away, noting that the way Dr Matiang’i’s house was raided was a move meant to spread a cloud of terror on people who called out President William Ruto and his administration.

“Raiding Matiangi’s house gangster style meant to spread a cloud of terror on all persons out of favour with the UDA regime.”

Dr Matiang’i’s home was raided on Wednesday night by a group of elite officers and though the reason was unknown, the Azimio la Umoja party leader Raila Odinga termed the operation as “completely unacceptable,” saying it was an affront to the rule of law.

“They say the more things change the more they remain the same. We are now witnessing what this country has been through before.

The times of late-night arrests and detention without any charges. There is no reason why police should be coming to somebody’s home at this hour of the night when people are asleep.

If Matiang’i has committed a crime warranting his arrest that should be made public and known to him, he can present himself for interrogation,” he said.

His lawyer Danstan Omari echoed Odinga, saying that if Dr Matiang’i had committed any crime, then he should be summoned to go and appear before any police station, record a statement if they have anything to charge him with, and not raid his home wanting to arrest him at night.
