Jowie mother speaks out after son is sentenced to death
The mother of Joseph Irungu alias Jowie has spoken after he son was condemned to death by the High Court for killing businesswoman Monica Irungu.
Speaking at the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi moments after Jowie was sentenced to death, Anastasia Thama maintained her son is innocent over the murder adding “the truth will come out one day”.
“My son has not killed anyone,” she said.
“He is innocent. And the Lord I believe will set him free just like Joseph in the Bible was prosecuted and later set free so will be my son,” she added.
Jowie’s sentence was passed by a determined Justice Grace Nzoika who announced a to a hushed court and expectant nation.
The sentencing was relayed live on national television.
In her judgment notes, Justice Nzoika explained that for a convict to be handed the option of rehabilitation, he or she must first acknowledge the commission of the offense he or she is accused of and the need to reform.
She observed that Jowie maintained he did not kill the Juba-based businesswoman even after the court pronounced him guilty.
Further, the court ruled that Jowie lacked stable partner relationships, had an anti social personality was impartial and a thrill seeker who used his anger to control others.
“Based on everything I have said, I’ve ordered the first accused person, being Joseph Kuria Irungu alias Jowie, shall suffer death as provided for the offense of murder under Section 204 of the Penal Code of Kenya,” ruled Justice Nzioka.
Jowie was found guilty of the offence on February 9, 2024, while his co-accused, former TV presenter Jacque Maribe was acquitted.
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has since announced intent to appeal the judgement which found Maribe guilty.
Maribe was recently employed as Head of Communications in the Ministry of Public Service.
