Jubilee fete begins

Kenyatta University hosted a two-day musical fete dubbed “come back my love” during the weekend.

The fete, themed Reflection Of An Era: Journey Of Kenya was part of the continuing celebration to mark 50 years since the country gained independence from the British.

The event was graced by Equity bank Chief Executive Officer Dr James Mwangi, Kenyatta University’s Vice Chancellor Prof Olive Mugenda and Nation Media Group CEO Linus Gitahi, who was the chief guest.

The musical took the audience down the memory lane.

It was also a moment for the audience to appreciate talent from students of Theatre Arts, Kenyatta University Travelling Theatre and the choir.

Appreciating culture

Artistes invited to the fete included Wyre, Eric Wainaina, Thomas Wasonga and the old timers John Nzenze and Joseph Kamaru.

As part of growing the media industry and nurturing talent, Mr Gitahi challenged KU students to team up with students from other institutions of higher learning and come up with a monthly business magazine.

“It is important to value our culture and appreciate each other. Diversity is what makes us a country with a rich cultural background,” said Mr Gitahi.

Meanwhile dance groups from Nairobi on Sunday held rehearsals and shot videos on Kimathi Street, as part of preparations for celebrations to mark 50 years of the country’s independence.

Donning colourful T-shirts bearing the phrase “We Are One; One Nation, One Vibe”, they caused a stir with their loud music and catchy dancing moves.

The usually busy road was closed to traffic till 11am when the groups left.

Performance by various groups are among activities lined up for the golden Jubilee celebrations.
